Dr. Baumgarten graduated from the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, after which he completed a residency at Washington University - Barnes Jewish Hospital. Dr. Baumgarten also completed a fellowship in sports medicine and shoulder surgery at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City. While there, he was an Associate Physician with the New York Mets baseball team. He also has experience with the St. Louis Rams, Blues and Cardinals sports teams and is the current Head Team Physician for the Sioux Falls Stampede and the Team Physician for Dakota State University.
Dr. Baumgarten was presented the Charles S. Neer Award for 2011 and 2013. The Neer Award is given annually for the best shoulder research performed that year. The 2011 article, entitled, "Effectiveness of Physical Therapy in Treating Atraumatic Full Thickness Rotator Cuff Tears" was written in conjunction with the MOON Group. The MOON Shoulder Group is a Multi-Centered Orthopaedic Outcomes Network. It is a group of doctors from around the country working together to do research with the hopes of giving patients with shoulder problems the best possible care. The 2013 article was titled "Defining Indications for Rotator Cuff Repair: Predictors of Failure of Nonoperative Treatment of Chronic, Symptomatic, Full-Thickness Rotator Cuff Tears" and was also authored by the MOON Group.
Dr. Baumgarten specializes in sports medicine and shoulder surgery and also practices general orthopedics. He is Board Certified by the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery.
